In 1969, students from the school began a study project for “Nature and Local research” under the leadership of their teacher Rolf-Peter Bartz which led to the establishment of the Thünen Museum.
The group built the museum by reconstructing the dilapidated manor house, a stable building and reworking the grounds.
In March of 1972, the Thünen Museum was opened to the general public.
In the following years the museum complex was expanded step by step as the museum acquired additional buildings which formerly had been part of the estate.
In 1983, the museum received a boost resulting from the publicity surrounding the 200th anniversary of Thünen’s birth.
From 1988 to 1993, the Thünen Museum at Tellow was a district museum supported by the Teterow district.
In 1990, historic status and protection was extended to additional structures within the estate compound and the Thünengesellschaft e.V. in Tellow was founded.
During the years 1993 to 1999, the museum was a member of the “Teterow District Cultural Foundation”.
In 1999, the non-profit company “Thünengut Tellow gemeinnützige GmbH” was founded, which has been taken the managemant of the museum since that time.
